Killing of Children: A Sign of the Collapse of Human Conscience in Today’s World

by faeze mohammadi

Amid ongoing regional developments that have once again drawn public attention to the humanitarian consequences of war, an Algerian university professor has strongly criticized the continued violence against civilians, describing the killing of women and children as a sign of the collapse of human values.

Noura Farhat, a university professor, made these remarks during the international webinar “Muslim Woman,” which focused on the condition of women and children in recent conflicts. Expressing sympathy with the families of victims, she emphasized that children—who should only experience innocence and life—are now being exposed to violence and insecurity.

She noted that such acts of violence are not merely temporary byproducts of war, adding: “The transformation of women and children into military targets reflects moral decay and the breakdown of human conscience in the modern world—a pattern that has been observed throughout history, including during the colonial era.”

Referring to contemporary examples, Farhat highlighted the situation of children in conflict zones such as Gaza and Yemen, stating that deprivation of basic needs like food and security represents only a fraction of the suffering endured by children in these regions.

The Algerian professor also criticized what she described as double standards in the enforcement of international law, stressing that attacks on civilian sites, including schools, constitute clear war crimes and cannot be justified under any circumstances.

She further argued that the world is facing a deep moral divide, saying: “Humanity stands at a crossroads—either to uphold ethical and human values or to align with a path that normalizes violence and injustice.”

Farhat concluded by emphasizing that current global conflicts are not merely military confrontations, but a test of human conscience and the world’s commitment to moral principles and human rights.
