Lebanese Academic Raises Concerns Over Civilian Deaths in Iran

A Lebanese university professor has strongly condemned what she described as widespread violations of human rights, particularly against women and children, during the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran. Speaking at the international webinar titled “Muslim Woman,” organized by the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought, Professor Rabab Al-Jawhari emphasized that recent actions constitute clear war crimes and crimes against humanity.

She highlighted the attack on students, especially referencing the incident at Minab Elementary School, as a stark example of what she called “systematic violence against civilians.” According to Al-Jawhari, targeting schools, hospitals, residential areas, journalists, and aid workers represents a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the United Nations Charter.

“This is not a war in the traditional sense,” she stated. “War occurs between armies. What we are witnessing is aggression, mass killing, and a direct assault on human dignity.” Al-Jawhari stressed that there is no legal justification for the actions taken by the United States and Israel, arguing that attacks on unarmed civilians—particularly children—cannot be defended under any international framework.

Referring to the Minab school incident, she questioned the global response: “Were these children carrying weapons in their school bags? Was their school a military site? Or was their only ‘threat’ their innocence and their smiles?” She further described the killing of women, children, and civilians as evidence of strategic failure and desperation, asserting that such actions reflect confusion and weakness rather than strength.

Al-Jawhari also criticized what she called global silence in the face of these, particularly regarding attacks on humanitarian workers and civilians. She warned that history would judge those who fail to stand against such injustices. Concluding her remarks, she expressed confidence that resistance movements would ultimately prevail, stating that “justice and victory will come,” and that nations subjected to such attacks will not surrender.
