Silence on the Killing of Women and Children Is a Betrayal of Humanity, Lebanese Official Says

by faeze mohammadi

A Lebanese cultural official for women’s affairs affiliated with Hezbollah has strongly condemned the ongoing violence against civilians, stating that silence in the face of the killing of women and children constitutes a clear violation of human rights and a betrayal of fundamental moral values.

Speaking at the international webinar titled “Muslim Women,” organized by the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought, Khadijeh Salloum addressed recent developments in the region and criticized what she described as double standards in global human rights discourse.

Referring to a verse from the Qur’an (Surah An-Nisa, 4:75), Salloum emphasized the moral and religious obligation to defend oppressed men, women, and children. She argued that the verse serves as a call to action against injustice and reflects the realities of current conflicts in the region.

Salloum pointed to incidents in Iran, Gaza, and Lebanon, including a deadly attack on a school in Minab, as examples of what she described as a broader pattern of aggression. According to her, these events are not isolated but part of a systematic approach aimed at destroying social and educational infrastructure while violating international agreements, including the Geneva Conventions and treaties related to the rights of women and children.

She stressed that targeting civilians, particularly women and children, cannot be justified under any circumstances and warned that such actions are intended to spread fear and weaken societal resilience. “Women are the builders of society, and children are its future,” she stated.

The Lebanese official also criticized countries that claim to uphold human rights while allegedly committing or supporting such actions, accusing them of hypocrisy and selective application of international law.

Highlighting Islamic teachings, Salloum noted that the religion explicitly prohibits the killing of women and children during warfare. She cited traditions from the Prophet Muhammad emphasizing ethical conduct even in times of conflict.

Salloum further called for increased awareness and responsibility among civil society, particularly women, urging them to remain steadfast and actively expose what she described as misleading narratives promoted by Western powers. She emphasized the importance of legal and media efforts to challenge these narratives.

In her concluding remarks, she expressed confidence that the will of “resistant nations” would ultimately prevail. She underscored the importance of perseverance and awareness, stating that ongoing struggles would continue until what she described as injustice and oppression are overcome.

The webinar brought together participants from various countries to discuss the role of Muslim women in addressing global challenges and promoting justice.
