Gaza Family Memorises Quran Amid Bombings

by خانم هاشمی

In the midst of relentless warfare in southern Gaza, a six-member Palestinian family has achieved a remarkable and deeply moving spiritual milestone: all members have completed memorising the entire Quran while living in temporary refugee tents, turning their journey of hardship into one of profound resilience.

Forced out of their home in the devastated Zeitoun neighbourhood of southern Gaza, the family embarked on a different kind of quest — not for bread, but to internalise every verse of the Quran under the constant threat of bombardment and displacement. Despite repeated forced moves from shelter to shelter, they kept their copies of the Quran close, continuing their recitation uninterrupted even when explosions shook the ground around them.

Every time they settled in a new temporary camp, their voices rose in recitation. Far from silencing them, the sound of their voices transformed the explosions into the distant backdrop against the stirring resonance of the holy text.

Unlike many who cling to familiar mosques for structure and community, this family chose “tent circles” as their place of worship and study. With each member — young and old — reciting and memorising, they completed the memorisation (ḥifẓ) of the entire Quran amid hunger, fear, and indiscriminate violence that has engulfed Gaza.

In a message to the world, the family declared: “If the enemy destroys our minarets in war, our hearts are mosques that cannot be demolished.”

Their achievement has turned them into what some in Gaza are calling a “Quranic family” — raising the banner of spiritual victory even before the end of the war, at a time when civilians throughout the enclave are struggling simply to survive.

This story comes against the broader backdrop of ongoing conflict in Gaza where hostilities and air strikes continue despite periodic ceasefire agreements, with dozens of Palestinians killed and many more wounded in recent weeks alone as reported by international news agencies.
