Inspiring Faith Rising Amid Despair in Khan Younis

A Beacon of Hope from the Heart of Gaza

In the war-ravaged region of Khan Younis, in Gaza’s southern strip, a remarkable story of faith and perseverance has emerged. Despite bombs, displacement, and hunger, three sisters—Hala (20), Alma (17), and Sama (15) al-Masri—have successfully memorized the entire Quran. Under the guidance of their eldest sister, Nada al-Masri (22), herself a hafizah (one who has memorized the Quran), the young trio achieved this sacred milestone.

The Path of Discipline and Sacrifice

Nada al-Masri set up a strict daily schedule in January 2024, which the sisters followed without delay. Even when forced to flee twice—first from Khan Younis to Rafah, and later to al‐Mawasi—they kept up their regimen. In harsh conditions—living in a tent, exposed to extreme heat and cold, with minimal comforts—they supported each other.

They studied tirelessly, sometimes in a small tent mosque, often without the luxuries many take for granted. Yet the trials—displacement, bombardment, hunger—didn’t break their resolve. Their father, Kamel Mohammed al-Masri, expressed overwhelming pride, saying: “I feel as if I own the whole world. This success is first by the grace of Almighty God, and then thanks to my daughter Nada.”

A Moment of Spiritual Triumph

At the Imam al-Dhahabi Mosque, hearts gathered long before bodies, in a ceremony filled with emotion and reverence. Tears of joy mingled with prayers and declarations of faith as the sisters recited the final verses of the Quran, completing their memorisation journey.

Alma described the journey as the hardest of her life. Sama said that, despite the war destroying everything—their school, their home—their determination remained. Hala reflected that on the Day of Judgment she hopes to “place the crown of honour on my parents’ heads.”

Light Amid Darkness

In a land marred by darkness, the achievement of Hala, Alma, and Sama al-Masri shines like a lantern. Their story reminds us that faith, determination, and love can flourish even in the most desolate places. In remembering the words of the Quran, they’ve forged a victory that no war can erase.
