Fatima al-Zahra Through Vatican Eyes: Justice, Even Alone

by خانم هاشمی

In a reflection that bridges interfaith understanding, Professor Christopher Clohessy, a Catholic priest and scholar of Shiʿi Islamic studies, has highlighted what he considers the most profound lesson from the life of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her): her unwavering commitment to justice even when she stood seemingly alone. Clohessy, who studied at Rome’s Pontifical Urbanianum University and earned his doctorate from the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI), currently teaches courses in Shiʿi theology, Qur’anic studies, Islamic ethics, and Christian-Muslim dialogue.

A Unique Voice in Interreligious Scholarship

Professor Clohessy’s academic work stands out for its deep engagement with Islamic primary sources, both Sunni and Shiʿi. Notably, he is the author of Fatima, Daughter of Muhammad, published in 2009 with an updated edition in 2018 — regarded as one of the first comprehensive Western-language studies of Fatima’s life grounded in original Arabic texts. His other works include Half of My Heart: The Narratives of Zaynab, Daughter of Ali (2018) and Angels Hastening: The Karbala’ Dreams (2021). For these contributions, Clohessy was named Distinguished Researcher of Shiʿi Studies at the 2021 World Book Awards of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Why Fatima’s Life Matters Today

Discussing his motivation for writing about Lady Fatima, Clohessy explained that although he initially intended to focus his doctoral research on Imam Husayn (peace be upon him), he was struck by the lack of serious academic treatments of Fatima’s life in Western languages. This inspired him to fill that gap with a rigorous, source-based study.

To non-Muslim audiences, he emphasizes that Lady Fatima’s life holds universal moral relevance. Her steadfastness in the face of injustice, her loyalty to truth and integrity, and her courage in defending principles are virtues that transcend religious boundaries. “Fatima al-Zahra is a model for all conscientious human beings,” he has said, underscoring that her example speaks to anyone committed to justice and honesty.

A Message of Integrity and Courage

Clohessy also points to the broader ethical lessons in Fatima’s life, especially for women and men today. He notes that her virtues — courage, moral uprightness, sincere devotion to truth — are not confined to gender or faith but are qualities every person can and should aspire to embody. According to him, if Lady Fatima could address people around the world today, her message would focus on living with authenticity and moral courage, since truthfulness lays the foundation for all other virtues.

Standing for Justice in a Divided World

In Clohessy’s view, remaining faithful to divine commands and resisting injustice and discrimination has the power to make the world a better place. He believes that Lady Fatima’s example — particularly her stance on issues of rights and fairness, such as during the historical events surrounding Fadak — resonates as a timeless call to ethical action and solidarity.
