Recent revelations have uncovered a disturbing pattern of serial sexual assaults across Australia, leaving women and children in fear.
The Moore Park Rapist: A Decade of Horror
Between 1991 and 1993, a series of brutal sexual assaults occurred in Sydney’s western suburbs, including Moore Park, Stanmore, Strathfield, and Ashfield. The perpetrator, later identified as 61-year-old Glenn Gary Cameron, operated under the guise of authority, often impersonating police officers or offering fake job opportunities to lure victims. His modus operandi involved threatening victims with knives and other weapons. Cameron evaded capture for over three decades until a breakthrough in 2022, when familial DNA analysis linked him to the crimes. In February 2024, he was arrested at Sydney International Airport as he prepared to travel to Thailand.
Cameron has since pleaded guilty to 13 charges, including 11 counts of aggravated sexual assault. An additional 14 offenses will be considered during his sentencing, scheduled for October 24, 2025, in the New South Wales District Court.
Other Notorious Cases and Ongoing Investigations
Australia has witnessed several other high-profile cases of serial sexual assaults:
- Belsh Duncar: In March 2025, Belsh Duncar was sentenced to 30 years in prison for drugging and assaulting 13 women.
- Queensland Daycare Worker: A former daycare employee was convicted of sexually abusing approximately 70 children between 2003 and 2022, capturing the acts on over 4,000 videos and images.
- Mr. Cruel: An unidentified assailant known as “Mr. Cruel” is suspected of abducting and assaulting three young girls in Melbourne between 1987 and 1990. The case remains unsolved, with the perpetrator also linked to the 1991 suspected murder of Karmein Chan.
Alarming Statistics on Sexual Violence in Australia
Recent data highlights the prevalence of sexual violence in Australia:
- In 2024, there were 40,087 victims of sexual assault recorded by police, marking a 10% increase from the previous year.
- Women constitute 84% of sexual assault victims, with 41% of these women aged between 10 and 17 years.
- Despite the high incidence, only 8% of sexual assaults are reported to the police, often due to mistrust or fear of the justice system.
These cases underscore the urgent need for enhanced measures to combat sexual violence and support victims in Australia.
