Jane Fonda warns that U.S. government actions against migrants undermine democratic norms and cross legal and ethical lines

Veteran Actor Criticises Federal Immigration Raids

Hollywood icon and longtime political activist Jane Fonda sharply criticised recent immigration enforcement operations by the U.S. federal government, warning that authoritarianism has infiltrated the structure of American governance. Fonda said the treatment of migrants and protesters has “clearly crossed moral and legal boundaries.”

Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Fonda highlighted that government officials are funded by the American people and argued that when a government fails to meet the needs of its citizens, “there is a fundamental problem.” She said that actions being taken today are unprecedented in modern U.S. history.

Claims of Authoritarian Overreach

The 88-year-old actress, known for her decades of activism, warned that authoritarianism “has made its way into every single nook and cranny of our government,” accusing federal agents of actions including shooting and blinding people, kidnapping individuals, and unlawfully deporting U.S. citizens.

Fonda’s remarks referenced protests in Minnesota following the January 7 fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, 37, by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. Good’s death sparked widespread protests and criticism of federal law enforcement tactics.

She described what she called “terrifying” events in which federal agents fired on demonstrators and used force against civilians, saying that these actions had exceeded all acceptable limits.

A Call for Solidarity and Resistance

Fonda urged Americans to stand together and work with organisations and community groups to oppose these developments. She emphasised the need for mutual support if federal authorities “come for you,” and said people must show that the United States remains a land of freedom and that those in power are not as powerful as they believe.

The Incident That Sparked Outrage

The actress’s comments come after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen, in north Minneapolis on January 7. Federal officials said the officer acted in self-defense, but videos circulated online showed Good driving away and not appearing to threaten the agents, leading to widespread public outcry and calls for accountability.

Critics, including local officials and activists, described the federal account as unfounded, noting that the video evidence contradicted claims that Good posed a direct threat.

Context: Federal Immigration Enforcement and Public Debate

The fatal shooting and the federal crackdown in cities such as Minneapolis have reignited debates over the role of ICE and the limits of federal authority in enforcing immigration policy. These developments have drawn sharp criticism from civil rights advocates and public figures alike, who argue that civil liberties and due process are at risk.

Fonda’s Long History of Activism

Jane Fonda has been one of Hollywood’s most politically active figures since the 1960s, opposing the Vietnam War and championing civil rights. In 2025, she participated in efforts to revive the Committee for the First Amendment, a group originally formed in the 1940s to defend free speech during a period of political repression — a move she framed as a response to what she calls threats to constitutional freedoms today.
