Young star shines as Iran takes gold at U21 World Taekwondo Championships

A Confident Path Through the Brackets

At the 2025 World Under-21 Taekwondo Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, 19-year-old Iranian taekwondo athlete Mobina Nematzadeh captured the gold medal in the women’s -53 kg division, adding another major title to her rapidly rising career.

Nematzadeh — who last year claimed Olympic bronze — entered the tournament with expectations high. After receiving a bye in the first round, she delivered commanding performances against opponents from Morocco and Germany before reaching the semifinals.

In the semifinal bout, she defeated her Bosnian competitor by clear margins in two rounds (3-1 and 9-2), securing a place in the final.

The Final: A Hard-Fought Victory

The gold medal match pitted Nematzadeh against Sude Yaren Uzunçavdar of Turkey. The fight was intense and extended to three rounds. Nematzadeh dominated the first round 9-3, dropped the second 7-12, but came back decisively in the third — a 5-1 win clinched the gold for her.

When the final sound rang, she stood triumphant — the first Iranian woman to earn gold at this U21 world championship — and sealed her status as one of taekwondo’s rising talents.

What This Means for Iran

Nematzadeh’s victory came on a memorable day for Iranian taekwondo. Alongside her, Radin Zeinali also won gold in the men’s -74 kg division — a sign of strength in Iran’s upcoming generation of athletes.

At the end of the third day, Iran had already collected multiple medals, placing the national team in a strong position to challenge for the overall team title once the championship concludes.

For Nematzadeh, this gold does more than add to her medal tally — it reinforces her status as a serious contender on the senior world stage and elevates hopes for future Olympics and world championships.

The Road Forward

With this achievement, all eyes will now be on how Nematzadeh builds on her momentum. Whether she continues dominating the -53 kg category or moves up in weight, her performance in Nairobi signals that she is no longer just a promising youngster — she is a world champion.

Given her youth and past success (including an Olympic medal), many expect her to become one of taekwondo’s leading figures for years to come.
