Dr. Mitra Ghalibafian, head of the Radio-Oncology Department at Mahak Hospital, has been named one of the top women in the SIOP Almanac 2025. This recognition highlights her influential role in pediatric cancer treatment and improving healthcare quality in Iran.

A Global Honor in Pediatric Oncology

The International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP), dedicated to supporting children with cancer and reducing treatment disparities worldwide, selected four women for its annual Women Leaders in Oncology list. Among them is Dr. Mitra Ghalibafian, an esteemed Iranian physician.

Two Decades of Dedication to Pediatric Radiotherapy

For nearly 20 years, Dr. Ghalibafian has led the Radio-Oncology Department at Mahak Hospital, specializing in radiation therapy for children with cancer. Her collaborations with medical centers in Canada and other countries have played a crucial role in advancing pediatric cancer treatment in Iran.

After earning her degree from Iran University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Ghalibafian continued her studies in Austria, gaining expertise in pathology and biomedical engineering. She later returned to Iran, dedicating herself to underserved regions and contributing to WHO’s polio eradication program.

Founder of Iran’s First Pediatric Radiotherapy Center

In 2006, Dr. Ghalibafian established Iran’s first specialized pediatric radiotherapy center, providing cutting-edge treatments to over 200 patients annually as the country’s sole pediatric radiation oncologist.

Pioneering Pediatric Neuro-Oncology in Iran

She also founded Iran’s Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program, which treats over 100 children with brain tumors each year.

Dr. Ghalibafian’s selection for SIOP Almanac 2025 underscores her global influence in improving pediatric cancer treatment, particularly in resource-limited countries.
