Conventions Have Failed; Children Have Lost Their Lives

by faeze mohammadi

As the Zionist regime continues its attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran, fundamental principles of human rights and international conventions have been violated. Children who should be safe have become victims of illegal aggression.

Deputy Minister of Justice and Secretary of the National Commission for Child Rights, while analyzing the dimensions of crimes committed against Iranian children following the Zionist regime’s aggression, announced legal actions to pursue this issue in international forums.

He emphasized that the continuous pattern of the Zionist regime’s attacks on various countries—including Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and Iran—shows that this regime does not respect any international rules. He added that the disregard for global human and ethical values has become a normalized practice for the Zionist regime.

The Secretary of the National Commission for Child Rights further noted that children are universally recognized as a red line during armed conflicts. Even the worst criminals tend to observe minimum standards when it comes to children. However, due to the ideological background and theoretical framework of these criminal Zionists, it is only natural that they fail to uphold basic rules regarding civilians.

He referred to international laws during war and peace, explaining: The rules that must be followed during armed conflict are known as humanitarian laws, primarily based on the Geneva Conventions. These conventions emphasize that countries involved in an armed conflict must adhere to principles such as the distinction between military and civilian personnel, and between military and non-military targets. This distinction applies both to people and locations.

He continued: The second principle is precaution—if civilians are present in an area, all necessary care must be taken. The third principle is proportionality, meaning that the scale of an attack must be proportional to the level of threat. He stressed: In the recent aggression by the Zionist regime against Iran, all three fundamental principles were clearly violated.

The Secretary announced that the Zionist regime has attacked hospitals, schools, child care centers, homes, and administrative buildings. On Tuesday night, several of these violations occurred in the provinces of Gilan and Tehran.
