Dr. Mandana Zafari, a medical genetics specialist, faculty member at the Islamic Azad University of Sari’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, and head of its Healthy Fertility Research Center, explains the establishment and objectives of this research center.
Establishment and Objectives
Dr. Zafari stated that the Healthy Fertility Research Center was approved by the university’s expansion council in March 2015. The center aims to:
- Develop and utilize modern knowledge to improve women’s health.
- Conduct fundamental research on women’s diseases, recurrent miscarriages, unwanted pregnancies, puberty health, screening for common cancers in women, and the use of modern treatment methods in women’s health.
- Encourage interested researchers in the field of reproductive health.
- Collaborate with other research centers domestically and internationally.
- Launch a journal focused on women’s health.
Successful Missions and Achievements
Dr. Zafari highlighted the center’s active and successful missions, including workshops, participation in external university projects, patent registration, and publication of articles in international journals. The center has also achieved high scores in annual evaluations.
Innovations and Ongoing Research Projects
Notable achievements of the center include:
- Registration of a patent for “Shirazi Thyme Mouthwash”
- Production of “Vitamin D-enriched Biscuits”
Dr. Zafari mentioned that the center is currently working on a research project on myrtle and yarrow extract for the treatment of candidal vaginitis. The center hopes to produce a vaginal cream from these two medicinal products after completing the laboratory phase.
Collaboration and Student Involvement
The center is pursuing research collaboration and a memorandum of understanding with the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences’ Research Department.
Dr. Zafari emphasized the importance of student theses and research projects by professors and faculty members in the center’s activities. All members of the center’s research council supervise student theses with medical, clinical psychology, and genetics students.
