Iran’s national women’s handball team has secured a spot in the World Championships for the third time, dedicating their achievement to the Iranian people. The team advanced to the final four of the Asian Championships after two victories in the group stage.
In their final preliminary match of the 20th Asian Women’s Handball Championship, Iran triumphed over Hong Kong. This victory, earning them four points and second place in their group, secured their place in the next round and their third consecutive qualification for the Women’s World Handball Championship.
Dominant Performance Secures Victory
In a fast-paced and closely contested first half against Hong Kong, the Iranian team took control early on. Their strong defense against Hong Kong’s swift attacks, combined with the brilliance of their offensive players, led to a 14-9 halftime lead. Despite a strong showing from Hong Kong in the second half, particularly in attack, the Iranian women, aware that a win was crucial for their third World Championship appearance, played with unwavering determination.
They ultimately secured a 26-17 victory, celebrating their advancement to the top four teams in Asia with two wins and four points. This achievement marks another historic milestone for Iranian women’s handball.
Coach Shafeian Praises Team’s Performance
Following their win against Hong Kong, head coach Nashmin Shafeian commented on the importance of the victory, stating, “The game against Hong Kong was very good. After discussions with the team, and following the tough match against the host India, we needed these two points to qualify and reach the World Championships for the third time.”
She added, “When we increased the point difference in the second half, we tried to utilize the entire team so that everyone could share in the joy. We congratulate the handball community and the people of Iran on this success.”
Iranian Women Make History Again
This is the third time the Iranian women’s team has qualified for the World Championships, following their successful campaigns in Jordan in 2021 and South Korea in 2022. This achievement highlights the team’s leading position among Iranian women’s team sports.
Iran’s next match will be against the top team from Group A on Sunday, December 9th, at 2:00 PM Iran time. The 20th Asian Women’s Handball Championship is being held in India until December 11th. The top four teams will qualify for the 2025 Women’s World Championship, with Iran already securing their spot.
