Iran’s Paralympic Award Defies Anti-Women Narratives

by خانم هاشمی

Hashemieh Motaghian, Tokyo Paralympic gold medalist, stated that the awarding of the “Women’s Paralympic Sports Development” prize to Iran refutes all negative propaganda against Iranian women.

Iran Recognized for Women’s Sports Development

During the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) Women’s Day Awards, Iran was selected as the top national Paralympic committee in the women’s sports development category for 2025. The award is presented annually on March 8, International Women’s Day, by the IPC.

A Historic Achievement for Iranian Women’s Sports

Motaghian, a gold medalist in javelin throw at the Tokyo Paralympics, expressed her pride in this achievement, congratulating Iranian sports officials. She emphasized that this award is the result of years of planning and dedication to the growth of women’s Paralympic sports in Iran.

Equal Rewards and Support for Paralympic Athletes

She highlighted that Iran prioritizes justice in sports, as repeatedly emphasized by the Supreme Leader. The Ministry of Sports and Youth grants equal rewards to Olympic and Paralympic medalists, which serves as a major motivation for athletes. Additionally, recent decisions have been made to equalize podium bonuses.

Iranian Women Athletes Defying Negative Stereotypes

Motaghian criticized the negative portrayal of Iranian women in foreign media, asserting that Iranian female athletes have proven there are no restrictions in the country. She noted that the IPC award is a clear rejection of such propaganda.

New Generation of Iranian Women Champions

Reflecting on past achievements, Motaghian mentioned that she, Sareh Javanmardi, and Zahra Nemati won medals at previous Paralympic Games. In the recent Paris Paralympics, only Javanmardi secured a gold medal, but a new wave of female athletes emerged victoriously.

Fatemeh Hemmati, Zahra Rahimi, Elham Salehi, Hajar Safarzadeh, and Parastoo Habibi all earned medals, proving that Iran’s sports officials focus on broader development rather than just a few star athletes.
