UNICEF Warns of Severe Infant Malnutrition Crisis Amid Gaza Siege

by خانم هاشمی

As Gaza’s infants face starvation under siege, UNICEF warns of a worsening crisis. With mothers dead or too malnourished to nurse, and humanitarian aid blocked, babies are dying—not from bullets, but from deprivation.

Infants in Gaza Face Starvation, Warns UNICEF Chief

Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF, issued a stark warning on Monday about the escalating malnutrition crisis among infants in Gaza, stressing that humanitarian access remains severely restricted.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Russell wrote:
“Thousands of babies in Gaza lack proper nutrition as aid access remains severely hampered.”

Mothers Starved, Babies at Risk of Death or Lifelong Harm

Russell highlighted the devastating toll of Israel’s ongoing assault on women and children:
“Many mothers have been killed or are too malnourished to breastfeed, leaving infants at risk of dying or with permanent health damage.”
She emphasized, “Every minute counts in saving their lives.”

War Without Relief

Despite mounting international calls for a ceasefire, Israel’s assault on Gaza has continued since October 2023, killing over 57,500 Palestinians—most of them women and children.

In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity for actions in Gaza.

Israel also faces genocide charges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its military campaign against the Gaza Strip.
