The Strongest Women in the World Live in Yemen

by خانم هاشمی

While Western and hostile media try to portray Yemeni women as illiterate and powerless, they are in fact some of the most capable, resilient, and influential women in the world—at the heart of resistance and social transformation in Yemen.

Women Leading Yemen’s Resistance

Yemen’s Islamic resistance movement has taken the lead in supporting the oppressed people of Palestine. Despite enduring blockades, war, and economic hardships, the people of Yemen—especially its women—continue to contribute powerfully to the resistance in every way they can. Over a decade of Saudi-American aggression has only solidified the vital role of Yemeni women in this struggle.

Behind Every Strong Nation, Stand Its Women

Women constitute half of every society and influence its direction deeply—either positively or negatively. The saying that “behind every great man is a great woman” holds true, and perhaps more so in societies resisting injustice, tyranny, and imperialism. In Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, and Yemen, women have been central to raising resilient generations and standing against Zionist-American ideology and aggression.

Yemeni women have actively played this role since long before the U.S.-backed Saudi aggression began. From moral support to direct participation, their efforts have shaped the frontlines of resistance.

What Makes the Yemeni Woman So Powerful?

What empowers the Yemeni woman to dedicate her life to the resistance? From where does she draw her strength? Has she truly fulfilled her role? And how will she continue to reject injustice and lead her nation forward?

Umm al-Sadiq al-Sharif, a Yemeni writer and activist, told Al-Manar: “When a Yemeni woman supports her brother on the battlefield, she draws inspiration from the legacy of Lady Khadijah, Lady Fatimah (peace be upon them), and the steadfastness of Lady Zainab (peace be upon her) in Karbala.”

She emphasized that despite ten years of brutal bombings, random airstrikes on hospitals, schools, and infrastructure, and an eight-year-long blockade by land, sea, and air, Yemeni women have remained steadfast. Their resistance forced even the so-called global superpower to the table.

Unshakable in Spirit and Action

Al-Sharif highlighted that Yemeni women supported the resistance materially and spiritually, sending their sons to the frontlines and standing behind every major operation—from what came to be known as the “Capital of Resolve and Will,” in reference to Sana’a’s steadfastness, to the ongoing struggle for the “Promised Victory” and Sacred Jihad. They endured a decade of hardship with patience and faith, viewing martyrdom and resistance as ultimate victories. They prayed for the success of the fighters and walked with firm steps on their sacred path.

The Strongest Women in the World

She said Yemeni women offered everything—from gold and money to personal belongings—to fund weapons and military development in the face of Zionist-American-British aggression. They stood by Gaza during direct war led by the U.S. and Britain, sending caravans of supplies and unwavering support to their fellow fighters.

Breaking the Silence on Media Frontlines

Yemeni women also took to media platforms, writing in local and international outlets, engaging on social media, and even appearing on television to expose the truth the world refuses to see—echoing the words of their leader, Sayyed Abdul-Malik al-Houthi.

Welcoming Martyrs with Pride and Honor

Al-Sharif spoke of the powerful scenes where Yemeni women welcome their martyred sons, husbands, fathers, and brothers with dignity and praise to God. This, she said, is the pinnacle of honor—a testimony to the strength and faith of Yemeni women.

Turning the Tide Against the Enemy

She noted that the enemy has witnessed how these women stand firm with their brothers, as Yemen—despite being under siege—has struck deep into enemy territory. From drone and missile attacks on Zionist capitals and the closure of Bab al-Mandab to operations in the Red Sea and the targeting of strategic Israeli infrastructure—Yemeni resistance has left a mark.

Speaking on behalf of Yemeni women, al-Sharif addressed the spirit of the martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, promising to carry his mission to victory or martyrdom. She reaffirmed Yemen’s unwavering support for Gaza, Al-Aqsa, Palestine, Lebanon, and all sanctities of the Ummah.

Humanitarian Frontlines: Women Rebuilding a Nation

Eng. Irtifa’ al-Qubati, often called “The Giant of Taiz,” is a pioneering woman dedicated to erasing the scars of war. As director of the Environmental Awareness Center and a goodwill ambassador for Norway’s Justice and Peace Organization, she works tirelessly to provide food, secure peace, and repatriate detainees.

She recounted, in a UN interview, how unexploded mines posed threats across Yemen—even in universities like Taiz. Her team risked their lives to remove them and make campuses safe again.

A mother of five, al-Qubati shared her passion for environmental protection and women’s empowerment, even after surviving attacks and gunfire. She never gave up—returning to her mission with even greater resolve.

Feeding the Nation, Uniting Women

Another example is Muna Luqman, founder of Food for Humanity and leader of Yemen’s largest women’s solidarity network. She’s now an advisor at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. She warns that over four million displaced Yemeni families live in the open, at risk of famine unless immediate international aid is provided.

The Strongest Women in the World

These women represent only a fraction of the countless Yemeni women who have mobilized, resisted, and served their nation with resilience and vision over the past decade.

Hidden from the World, Yet Leading Its Conscience

Today, many Yemeni women are trained in weaponry while also raising and educating their children in the culture of resistance. Often absent from global media lenses, their strength is real, visible in every act of defiance and compassion.

Despite the veil and niqab that Western media demonize, Yemeni women have never allowed their appearance to limit their power. Rather, they see their modesty as a fortress, propelling them forward in the fight for dignity and justice.
