Dr. Maryam Nouri Balanji’s Cancer Drug Innovation Earns Global Recognition at SVIIF 2025
In a remarkable achievement for Iranian science on the world stage, Dr. Maryam Nouri Balanji has claimed the highest honor at the Silicon Valley International Invention Festival (SVIIF 2025) in California for her groundbreaking cancer treatment innovation. Her work earned the Global Elite Gold Medal and first-place recognition at one of the most prestigious innovation events in the world.
Breaking New Ground in Cancer Treatment
Dr. Nouri Balanji, a biomedical researcher from Qeshm Island, Iran, and part of the country’s vibrant free-zones innovation community, was celebrated for developing a knowledge-based recombinant drug with significant anti-cancer potential.
Her invention is derived from unique sugar compounds extracted from a rare species of sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) found in the warm waters off northern Qeshm. The drug — designed for both injectable and oral use — has shown promising potential to inhibit cancer cell growth and reduce tumors, with the aim of advancing human clinical treatments.
This breakthrough underscores the power of combining traditional biological resources with modern biotech research. The project was developed collaboratively with a team of Iranian and Canadian experts, with organizational support from Iran’s Supreme Council of Free Zones.
World Stage Recognition at SVIIF 2025
The Silicon Valley International Invention Festival (SVIIF) is an annual event held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, California. Organized under the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA), the festival attracts innovators from across the globe to present advanced technologies and compete for international awards.
SVIIF 2025 brought together inventions across fields such as medical innovation, green energy, environmental solutions, smart agriculture and food technologies. Dr. Nouri Balanji’s work was awarded first place and the gold medal among a competitive field of global participants.
Every member of her research team received the gold medal in recognition of their collective achievement.
A Track Record of International Success
This latest success is not Dr. Nouri Balanji’s first international award. In 2023, she won first prize and a global gold medal at the Kaohsiung International Invention and Innovation Festival in Taiwan, and was also awarded an honorary full scholarship from Finland at competitions organized by the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIPA).
Her persistent excellence highlights Iran’s growing presence in global innovation platforms, particularly in the life sciences and health sectors.
About SVIIF and the Global Innovation Community
The Silicon Valley International Invention Festival — part of a global network of invention expos — functions as a key platform for innovators to demonstrate their work, forge international partnerships, and connect with industry leaders, investors, and research institutions.
By celebrating innovations that blend scientific rigor with societal impact, SVIIF aims to drive technological progress and foster global collaboration among inventors, entrepreneurs, and experts.
