Celebrating Christmas with Maryam: The Only Woman Named in the Quran

by خانم هاشمی

As Christmas approaches, many will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. While the holiday holds deep significance for Christians, it’s worth remembering that the story of Jesus resonates across faiths. In the Quran, the central religious text of Islam, Jesus is revered as a prophet, and his mother, Mary, holds a unique place as the only woman mentioned by name.

The story of Jesus (peace be upon him) is beautifully woven into the chapters of Maryam (Mary), Nisa (Women), Al-Imran (The Family of Imran), etc.

His name, Isa, appears 25 times, and Messiah 9 times, in the Quran. His mother, Mary, is the only woman whose name is mentioned so frequently (34 times).

Jesus’ Birth From The Virgin Mary

Jesus (peace be upon him) is one of the greatest prophets. God created him miraculously from the Virgin Mary, a truly extraordinary event.

  • “And [remember] when the angels said, ‘O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him whose name is the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, distinguished in this world and the hereafter and one of those brought near [to Allah].'” (Quran 3:45)

The Quran states:

  • “That is how your Lord revealed it to you. It is easy for Him, and it was already decreed.” (Quran 19:21)

His Miracles

As a newborn, Jesus spoke and defended his mother against accusations. He grew up to become a prophet, performing miracles like healing the sick and raising the dead. Despite his divine mission, only a few believed in him.

Ascension of Jesus

The Quranic Perspective on His Ascension

The Quran clarifies that Jesus was not crucified but was raised to heaven:

  • “And [because of] their saying, “Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah .” And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ therein are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following assumption. And they did not kill him for certain.”(Quran 4:157)
  • “But Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Power, Wise.” (Quran 4:158)

Jesus And The Islamic Concept of Mahdi

  • “And [Jesus] said, ‘Peace be upon me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive.'” (Quran 19:33)

May the birth of the Word of God, Jesus (peace be upon him), be celebrated by all.

And God saved your messianic breath, for a day when the earth’s breaths are numbered! Peace be upon you, on the day you will be resurrected again in the promised army of the end times.

The day is not far when the flower of Mary will follow the flower of Narcissus.

O Allah, hasten the relief for Your chosen one.
