Cannes Film Festival red carpet protest highlights murders of women

by Narges Mohammadi

According to JahanBanou, a group of female protesters has staged a protest on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, unfurling a banner to highlight violence against women

The group set off smoke flares and held their fists in the air as they carried the banner, showing the names of 129 women they say have been murdered in France since the last Cannes festival

It came two days after another red-carpet protest against sexual violence. At the premiere of Three Thousand Years of Longing on Friday, a woman took off her clothes to reveal the message “stop raping us” on her body next to the colors of the Ukraine flag, with red paint on her underwear

The protests have grabbed headlines at the festival, which hosts some of the world’s leading filmmakers and actors. This year’s event has seen screenings of films including Tom Cruise’s Top Gun sequel and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic

It is very interesting how these festivals have recently turned out to be a place of protest and appeal. Cannes Film Festival is absolutely important to the hosts and guests, however, we are witnessing in a country that claims women have freedom and safety; women come out in front of all these cameras and paparazzi shout their demands

Last year, at Met Gala Fashion show, women would attend the show with outfits that had political quotes on them that each was demanding something
