Atieh Sadat Hosseini breaks ground at Cairo 2025
A Milestone Moment
In a landmark achievement for Iranian sport, Atieh Sadat Hosseini made history by claiming the first ever women’s gold medal for Iran in the World Para Powerlifting Championships. Competing in the up to 61 kg category at the 11th edition of the championships, she successfully lifted 85 kg and 90 kg, securing her place on the top podium.
Though she missed the third lift attempt of 94 kg, her earlier performances were sufficient to win the title. Meanwhile, according to a later report, she recorded a total of 175 kg across her lifts, contributing to Iran’s second women’s gold medal in the youth division of this year’s event.
The Event and Its Context
The youth competition took place over two consecutive days (October 8 & 9) and involved 124 athletes from 28 National Paralympic Committees. Hosseini’s victory came during the Rookie & Next Gen Championships, part of the Cairo 2025 World Para Powerlifting festival.
Her gold in the 61 kg class also earned her a medal both for her main lift and for her total — setting her apart as a dominant competitor in this field.
Notably, Iran’s youth para powerlifting team ended the youth segment of Cairo 2025 with an impressive 8 gold medals and 1 silver, underlining a strong performance across weight classes.
Significance and Outlook
Hosseini’s win is more than just a medal — it is a symbolic breakthrough for Iranian women in para athletics, breaking barriers and expanding the horizon of what’s possible. Her success signals growing momentum behind women’s participation and recognition in para sports within Iran.
Internationally, her name enters the record books. The World Para Powerlifting governing body’s official site notes that she is now Iran’s first-ever female world champion in this discipline.
As the elite division of the championships continues through October, many will watch closely to see whether her victory inspires further breakthroughs at senior levels.
Hosseini’s gold not only reshapes Iran’s para lifting landscape—it charts a new course for future generations of female athletes aspiring to international success.
