A doctor at Westmead Hospital in Sydney has been granted bail after being charged over an alleged hidden-camera operation in hospital toilets that resulted in the recording of approximately 4,500 videos of patients and staff.
New South Wales Police arrested the 33-year-old man on Wednesday after discovering the massive cache of illicit videos on his electronic devices. The investigation was launched following reports from hospital staff who raised suspicions.
The doctor, whose name has been suppressed by the court, faces multiple charges related to the alleged installation of recording devices. The footage, allegedly captured over a significant period, is believed to include a large number of unsuspecting individuals.
The case has ignited a wave of public outrage and profound concern over privacy and security within healthcare facilities, places where patients are at their most vulnerable.
“Westmead Hospital is working closely with NSW Police and NSW Health as the investigation continues,” a hospital spokesperson stated, acknowledging the gravity of the incident and the breach of trust.
While the accused has been released on bail under strict conditions, police efforts are now focused on the painstaking process of reviewing the content to identify potential victims. Authorities have urged anyone with concerns or information to come forward.
The matter is due to return to court at a later date.
